Q&A
What is the 2005 Pregnancy Free Summer Pledge?
The pledge is a document that you and your parents sign. By signing
the pledge you affirm that you won't get pregnant during the summer
of 2005.
Is there a reward?
Yes, if you don't experience an unplanned pregnancy that is a great
reward. If you and your parents decide to establish a material award
that is up to you all.
What made you create the pledge?
I have heard of abstinence pledges, but I wanted to create a pledge
that was specifically about not getting pregnant.
Where can I get the pledge?
You can download
the pledge here.
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Author of the Unplanned Pregnancy Book for Teens and College Students
launches Pregnancy Free Summer Pledge .
Dorrie Williams-Wheeler, author of The Unplanned Pregnancy Book
for Teens and College Students recently announced the 2005 Pregnancy
Free Summer Pledge. The pledge is a form that a young woman or
her parents can download from the Unplanned Pregnancy Book website.
When the young woman signs the pledge she is affirming that she
will not get pregnant during the summer of 2005.
"School is out and it's summer. A lot of teens find themselves
with a lot of free time. Often parents might be working and feel
like the young woman is old enough to stay at home alone or to
be monitored only with light supervision such as a neighbor or
grandparents checking in on them. Through my work with young girls
I found that most people I talked to lost their virginity or got
pregnant during school breaks. The pledge was designed to open
the line of communication between the young woman and her parents
or guardian about preventing an unplanned pregnancy."
Supporters of abstinence only may have a problem with the pledge.
One portion of the pledge states, "If I do decide to have
sex I will discuss this subject with my parents before participating
in any sexual activity. If for some reason I am uncomfortable
with discussing my plans to have sex with my parents I will use
a condom and a back up method of birth control."
Williams-Wheeler explains why the pledge is especially close
to her and why she factored the possibility of sex into the pledge,
"In a perfect world teens won't have sex, but I know that
is not a reality for every teen. I had sex at age 15, and when
I think about it, I lost my virginity in the summer time. I was
an A student so my mother didn't worry about what I was doing
while she was at work. It's not a "Don't have sex pledge,"
it's a "Don't get pregnant pledge." I just want young
women to be protected from sexually transmitted diseases and unplanned
pregnancy if they do have sex this summer."
