Just Another Girl on the I.R.T. DVD Review
Rated R
Suggested ages-Mature High School/College

Just Another Girl on the IRT is an independent film that was made in the early 90's. This film is rated R, mostly for the subject matter and strong language.

This film is about a young girl named Chantel Mitchell who lives in the projects with her mother, father and two brothers. Her family is poor but Chantel is happy and has a zest for life. She plans to graduate from high school early and go to college. Her life is pretty typical until she hooks up with Ty. Ty has money, a jeep and his mother lets him have female company, even overnight. The two become sexually active. Although she was taking the pill, she had just started the pill, Ty didn't use a condom and Chantel becomes pregnant.

She hides her pregnancy from everyone but Ty. He gives her money for an abortion and she spends it shopping. Then at 29 weeks she goes into premature labor. Scared, ashamed, frightened she orders Ty to "get rid of the baby." They wrap the baby up in a plastic bag and he takes it out. He couldn't go through with it. A social services emloyee that Chantal befriended earlier takes them to the hospital.

The most moving part of the movie are in the final scenes when Chantal laments that she doesn't want the baby and expresses how she wanted to do things with her life. It's as if she has an instant realization that her life has changed forever.

In the end, Chantal and Ty don't remain a couple, but they continue to raise their daughter together. Chantal tells the camera that she is taking courses at community college.

This controversal film has many admirers and critics. It deals with some tough topics. I think this film would be best used in a social group pregnancy unit or on the college level.
